When my desktop gets crowded, organize it

My partner has literally no icons on his desktop. Not even one!  Everything is perfectly organized where folders are neatly kept in sidebars. He also has beautiful artwork displayed on his screen which is there to inspire him. Me on the other hand: no wallpaper, desktop full of folders, icons, pictures, you name it. Chaos!

While there are not many people like Dave, many – me among them – inspire to have their desktops cleaned and organized. Once a week at least, I do perform a desktop cleanup. It’s a draining task, takes a lot of time and patience.

When our Product Team first introduced the card called ‘When my desktop gets crowded, organize it’ I admit I wasn’t too excited initially. I imagined it would simply grab ALL I have on my desktop and pack it into one folder that I will never locate. Gosh, was I wrong!desktop-gets-crowded

The card does pack my desktop items into a folder yet there is a cool logic behind it!

First of all, I get to choose when the action is triggered. I can choose a number of items on my desktop (it could be 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50). When that threshold is reached this would trigger Ellp to clean up my desktop. Every minute, Ellp performs a check. The moment my desktop items reach the chosen number, Ellp is there to organize them for me into a folder called ‘Desktop Items [ELLP]’ that is now located on my desktop and easy to find as there are (almost) no items there.

Second of all, there are some items still left on my desktop and this is brilliant! Why? As Ellp never packs existing folders so you can always find them in their place. You can also easily move your files from the ‘Desktop Items [ELLP]’ to folders that should have been stored to in the first place. The rest, you simply delete.

desktop-gets-crowded

Third of all, any items visible in the Public Desktop are not handled by this card. Which means that if your PC is part of a work network, some files will not be moved to the folder created by Ellp. They will remain visible on your desktop for you to access them easily.

How do you take files out of the ‘Desktop Items [ELLP]’ folder?

The same way you’d move them among other folders. You either drag them to where you want them to be, or you copy and paste them in the desired location.

‘When my desktop gets crowded, organize it’ card essentially means no more random files scattered all over your desktop and very minimal effort on your end. Ever since this card was introduced, we have noticed the constant interest in it and thousands of users have it activated. Funnily enough, there was also a visible spike in the use of the Ellp card called ‘When my favorite card posts a picture, set as desktop background’. Coincidence?

If you’re a fan of getting things done faster, then Ellp is just the right solution for you. This new PC assistant can take care of a variety of tasks for you from maintaining your PC at the optimal level of performance, to helping you stay focused and productive, to monitoring your online safety, and even elevating your entertainment. And what’s best – Ellp is free to download and yours to keep!

When my email is involved in a data breach…

In today’s information age, technology is absolutely everywhere! It’s at home, at the office, in the palm of our hands, it’s signaling traffic messages, at your local eatery, it’s in outer space – it’s practically all around us! As technology progresses and becomes so readily available to us, this means that we end up using it more and more each day to get things done.

We’ve gotten so used to signing in to various applications and platforms with our email address and/or our social media accounts that we don’t even seem to notice it anymore. Though just because something is common practice doesn’t make it safe. With significantly more time spent online, we’re bound to be exposed to the dark side of the internet and all the dangers that lie within its grasp. Whatever information we use online, is at risk of being lifted by hackers, identity thieves, and unscrupulous marketers. So just as you wouldn’t like your neighbor snooping around your backyard, online personal information is no exception.

The bad news

Even though we all take precautions to safeguard such data, it seems like not a day goes by without someone having to go through the ordeal of having one of their online accounts being breached or compromised. An email breach can be very distressing since emails can reveal plenty of sensitive data such as passport, or credit card details. The daunting part of being involved in an account breach is actually recognizing that your account has been breached. Unlike regular real-life thieves, cyber-hackers don’t leave any visible signs behind them. No cracking doors, no half-opened windows. In the news, they’ve discussed hacked accounts in the millions. The individual people behind those breached accounts are left there, hopeless and helpless. Even if your account gets hacked, no one alerts you directly to let you know. If you are (un)lucky, you eventually somehow find out, and by then it’s probably too late.

email-involved-in-data-breach

The good news

To remedy this, Ellp has teamed up with HaveIBeenPwned.com in order to create an automated solution for you, so that you no longer have to worry. With the ‘When my email is involved in a data breach, alert me’ card activated, each time your email is involved in a data breach, Ellp will alert you. This Ellp card will safely check all the accounts which are linked to your email address for possible breaches. It is advised that once notified of a possible breach you should immediately change your password to safeguard yourself.

The even better news

Ellp’s recently (September 2017) introduced the multi-configuration feature for several cards, including ‘When my email is involved in a data breach, alert me’ card. It’s now possible to safeguard more than one email account with Ellp! Once you add the first email address, you simply click on ‘Add another’ and continue until all your accounts are listed. You may even set up Ellp to safeguard the accounts of your loved ones too.

I bet you’re feeling a lot more relaxed now, knowing that Ellp can help you take care of your online accounts. Before you get too comfy, make sure this Ellp card is switched on. If you haven’t tried Ellp yet, what are you waiting for? Download Ellp and stay on top of your online security.

When I unplug my headphones…

October 2 - (3 Min Read)

Usually, when I work on creative content I listen to Skrillex. And in case you’re not sure what type of music that is – it’s really noisy electronic dance music. Also known as – not office-friendly. Another thing that I do a lot when creating content is moving around my desk with my headphones on. If you put two and two together, you’ll know where I’m taking this. Every now and then, the Ellp office gets blasted with the unexpected and overwhelming sound of my music… as my headphones get unplugged by accident. Oops!

But now that’s history! To the joy and relief of my colleagues, several weeks ago I activated the new Ellp card called ‘When I unplug my headphones, mute the sound’. So now my creative endeavors no longer disturb my super-focused colleagues! It even feels like everyone is a bit more relaxed around me now 😉

Apparently, I was not the only one in a need of this Ellp card. Throughout the months we’ve been receiving a lot of similar requests like this from you. This was a no-brainer for the product team to create this card. Just look at this beauty:

When I unplug my headphones

How does it work?

Normally your PC can detect when your headphones are plugged in, but it can’t detect when they’re unplugged. But with Ellp can help it can! By simply activating this card, Ellp will mute the sound the moment you unplug your headphones, so you can keep the peace.

You don’t have to be a creative Skrillex fan that works at a busy office to take full advantage of this amazing card. There are other scenarios where it comes in really handy:

  • You’re planning a surprise for a loved one. To get ideas you might use YouTube videos a while they’re in the other room and your headsets get unplugged by your pet.
  • You’re watching a horror movie with your screen facing the wall while your kids play in front of you and the headset gets unplugged.
  • When you play a game in the middle of the night and someone walks into the room scaring you to the point that you jump and unplug the headset (no way it only happens in our family!)

There are plenty other scenarios you could use this card for. Just make sure to activate this card, so you’ll never again have to see the surprise/ horror/ disbelief on people’s faces when they unexpectedly get to hear what you’re listening to.

As a bonus, remember that you can combine this card with some other sound-related Ellp cards that open an assigned application for you when you plugged in your headset.

Technical limitation: These cards work only with devices connected via USB.

What does that mean? Some of your favorite cards can do more than one job at a time for you. To find out how to make the most out of this functionality, check our Head of Product Reuben’s blog post called Extending the Ellp Card.

More new aesthetic UI and UX changes were introduced to Ellp’s design. Both the Ellp cards and view panel were revamped with a touch of freshness. The design is even simpler now. Navigation within the product is also further simplified and users can now get a better idea of the full range of cards which are right for them.

Want to get your tagged Facebook photos organized?

September 25 - (3 Min Read)

Gone are the days of utilizing traditional photo albums – we’ve now gone completely digital! Why so? Well, besides the costs associated with tangible photo albums, the digital option is so much easier – not to mention more cost-effective. The only cost is your time and your internet subscription. We’ve swiftly moved from paper to pixels, with cloud-based online albums that can be accessed from absolutely everywhere – provided that you remember your login credentials.

A great example is Facebook! This social platform has one of the biggest online photo libraries out there, allowing for millions of photos to be uploaded and stored daily. Even with such a huge photo library and full control over our tagged photos, we still tend to feel the need to save everything into folders on our PC as a keepsake to ensure all our photos are backed up.

Or, we just want to make sure that we will never again miss a photo that we are tagged in. Why? For several practical reasons (choose at least one):

  • To always view new pictures of your cute grandchild/ nephew/ niece/ own child when you are on a business trip or away from home;
  • To hide from your timeline any unexpected shots from a party/ family gathering/ day out that could shake your reputation among your coworkers;
  • To have one-click access to all amazing pictures that commemorate important moments of your life.

Tagged-Facebook-photos-organized

Life without Ellp

So the normal way of saving tagged photos on Facebook is to search for your photo, save it on your PC, and then place it into a folder of your choice. If you’re quite social, this means you’d need to go through the process of saving and sorting your tagged photos on a pretty regular basis. I know what you’re thinking, this way of saving photos sounds daunting and certainly time-consuming, to say the least!

Life with Ellp

No worries, Ellp has got you sorted! Organizing and keeping track of your tagged photos couldn’t get any easier. Stop wasting time locating, saving, and storing your tagged Facebook photos and let Ellp take care of that for you. Activate the Ellp card called ‘When I am tagged in a Facebook photo, download a copy’. Then, simply select where you’d like your tagged photos to be saved and switch the activation toggle on in just one click. So the next time you’re tagged in a Facebook photo, Ellp will alert you and save your tagged photos to a designated folder on your PC. This way you’ll never leave another precious photo moment behind!

If you’re a fan of getting things done faster, then Ellp is just the right solution for you. This new PC assistant can take care of a variety of tasks for you from maintaining your PC at the optimal level of performance, to helping you stay focused and be productive, to monitoring your online safety and even to elevating your entertainment. Extending the Ellp card

multi-config feature-00
Written by Reuben Borg
Head of Product

September 7 - (5 Min Read)

An all-new level of Ellp card Customization is something we’ve been working on for a while now, as you may recall from my interview a couple of weeks ago. And for those who follow our blog regularly, you might also be familiar with the way we prioritize feedback, and the huge influence you guys have on our product strategy.

One of the main topics among the 3,000+ positive messages we received so far has been adding more flexibility on the Ellp Cards’ customization options; which is a way you would be able to make an Ellp card truly yours.

The recently released Ellp Multi-Config feature is the first huge step in this direction. Don’t worry too much about the geeky name we chose for it, because the true definition you can use is “extending the awesomeness of a card to as much as I want to”  😉

Let’s take the card ‘When I turn on my PC, open my favorite website’ as an example. Till now, you could only configure this for 1 website, say your Gmail. But you might also want to open Facebook and some news site, right? Or perhaps set the ‘When my email is involved in a data breach, alert me’  card to also check online accounts registered on your partner’s, children’s, or parents’ email addresses. Well, now you can.

This feature is currently available on 14 of our Ellp Cards. To show you exactly how it works, I’ll use the card ‘When I turn on my PC, open my favorite website’ as an example. As always, 3 simple steps are key:

  • Step 1: Configure the first instance of the card to your liking, and activate it by clicking on the yellow ‘Activate Card’  button at the bottom.

multi-config feature-01

  • Step 2: The card is now ON! Go ahead and create a second instance of the card by clicking on the grayish ‘ADD ANOTHER’  button right below the card title. You should notice that the card title has duplicated itself. (Note: the ‘ADD ANOTHER’ button will only be visible on the Ellp Cards which support the multi-config feature).
  • Step 3: Simply edit the second instance as you wish. If the card is already ON, then there is no need to re-activate it.

multi-config feature-02

That’s it! Now you have a single card doing more for you 🙃 You can keep adding more instances – it’s unlimited!

multi-config feature-03

Created an instance by mistake? Or perhaps there is one you don’t need anymore? Just click on the close ( x ) right next to it, and it’s gone.

Finally, when you go back to the main screen, you will notice that the Ellp card you just configured with more than 1 instance will have a stacked-like look. This is for you to easily distinguish which cards you have set more than one time.

multi-config feature-04

Yep, that simple. If you like the Ellp Cards and what they do, then you will love this, trust me!

How to stop your PC from overheating with Ellp

pc overheating-00
Written by Aneta
Ellp Evangelist

September 4 - (3 Min Read)

Just like kryptonite is Superman’s weakness, depriving him of his superpowers, heat, similarly is the number one enemy of all electronics – and PCs are no exception! Over time, with improved CPU performance, enhanced graphic cards, and higher resolutions, PCs have become more powerful. But on the flip side, this comes at a cost, and that is excessive PC heat. So keeping our PC running within safe temperatures is of utmost importance, especially during the hot summer months.

What causes PCs to overheat?

Don’t go into panic mode! Just because your laptop seems hot, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s overheating. However, there are some tell-tale signs that indicate that your PC might be struggling due to excessive heat. For example, if your laptop’s fan is running at maximum speed for most of the time, it is a sign of overheating. Another sign is if your laptop starts dropping in performance, what happens is your CPU starts slowing down so it can reduce some of that excessive heat pressure.

Unfortunately most of us tend to ignore these signs. This is why a cooling system is one of the most critical components of your device. Why? Well, without it the electrical components of your PC wouldn’t be able to function, resulting in overheating.

What’s the damage?

We might overlook PC overheating and not take it as seriously as we should. However, if it keeps on occurring and we keep ignoring the signs, then overheating can lead to hardware failure, and cause damage that’s way beyond repair! If your laptop keeps on randomly shutting down on you, it could be that excessive heat is affecting the CPU. This slows down your PC and will start struggling – even to perform the most basic of tasks. Overheating might also cause potential data loss, and can even take a jab at affecting your PC’s integral components, such as the motherboard.

But how can you know when your PC is overheating?

Don’t fret, Ellp is here to help with that too. By simply activating the ‘When my PC is overheating, alert me’ card, you’ll be able to find out immediately. So, don’t let your PC overheat! Download Ellp and activate this card to get notified each time your PC overheats, so you’re always a step ahead!

How to manage your laptop’s battery with Ellp

Written by Aneta
Online Marketing Champion

August 21 - (6 Min Read)

If you’re anything like me, you may be in a love-hate relationship with your laptop battery. You do appreciate the flexibility it gives you to work away from your desk, or even from a coffee place, yet the moment the battery is ready to die on you feels like the most dreadful moment of your day. Maybe it’s just me but I can’t stand it – the rush to get the cables (they seem to hide from me, too!) and plug them in on time before my system goes to sleep.

Therefore, my two personal all-time-favorite Ellp cards are the ones related to battery management! And we have two of them, designed to help us not only to be in control of the battery levels but also to make sure we treat our battery well and extend its lifetime.

manage laptop battery - battery Ellp cards

Battery Card 1: When my battery is half empty, let me know.

You may be very well accustomed with this card by now as it has been available for quite a long time now. It is designed to save you from the stress, embarrassment, irritation, you name it, of having your laptop battery dying on you in the least desirable moment.

Usually, laptops only alert you when your battery is too low. If you’re constantly on the go, you need to plan ahead in order to save battery power. So, if you’d rather dodge flat battery and would like your laptop to warn you a tad bit sooner, Ellp can help with that!

All you need to do, once within the card editor, is to select the level of the battery that you want to be notified about. You can choose any threshold between 99% and 10%, up to your liking. This way, you’re adjusting your notification to meet your personal needs. Once you’re done, simply switch the activation toggle on, and that’s you all set.

Each time your battery reaches its threshold, Ellp will notify you so you know it’s time to get charging. Like this, you’ll be able to give yourself a bit of a heads up before your laptop dies on you, giving you ample time to plan ahead and charge your laptop before commuting or simply provide you with enough time to finish and most importantly save all your work.

Battery Card 2: When my battery is fully charged, let me know.

This card is very new, in fact, it was introduced this month and is already collecting some great feedback (and not only from me!) This is one of those cards that Ellp introduced based on our users’ suggestions. How amazing is that!

The thing with PC battery notifications is that you’re notified when your devices’ battery is running low, however, there is no available setting to let you know when your device has been fully charged.

You may be a bit confused on why would anyone need a notification like that. Let me explain. While research shows that leaving your laptop plugged in with the battery fully charged doesn’t cause any damage to the battery (may differ depending on the battery type), it may still negatively affect its lifespan. Who would want that? Plus, unplugging is good for your energy bills.

Once activated, this card will notify you whenever your battery is fully charged. Then, it is up to you to either unplug your laptop or keep it plugged in. After all, you know what kind of work or movie you’re working on or watching, and how much battery it eats up. Hence, the decision is totally up to you.

Can you see how powerful these two cards can be when combined? Let me tell you, for me, they are a great experience booster for my laptop. No more battery dying on me unexpectedly, no more staying put in one place to charge my battery once full. I now have full control over my battery in a hassle-free and comfortable way. Does it sound like something you’d like, too?

This is not a trial. It’s yours to keep!
