Here are our top 5 tips to improve PC performance:

Ellp Tip 1: Start and shut down your PC properly

This simple rule may surprise you, especially being at the top of the list. And yet a lot of people tend to put their PCs to sleep rather than shutting them down after they’re done with using them. But it’s a mistake. Starting your PC after a proper shutdown or restarting your PC helps your computer to recalibrate after a full day of work. After all, even your PC needs a little shut-eye!

It is easy enough to do yourself yet Ellp, being your PC assistant, can help you out. It offers a card called ‘When it’s time, turn off my PC’. This card lets you choose at what time you’d like your PC to shut down. Once you switch the activation toggle on, it starts doing the work for you.

Ellp Tip 2: Monitor your PC startup time

Since your PC is not new anymore it may be taking a bit longer to start up. What is longer? Any time over 1 minute should be alarming. For some of us, it’s a good time to make ourselves a cup of tea. But, in fact, a long startup is your PC’s way of asking for help. What is happening unknowingly to us, is that multiple programs are opening up upon PC startup at the same time. They may not only hinder your PC startup time, chances are that these programs continue to run in the background well after startup, using up a large chunk of your PC’s memory. This drains your PC resources and further slows it down.

What to do to improve PC performance?

Your PC assistant can help you monitor which applications are slowing down your PC at startup. You can do this by simply activating the When an application starts slowing down my PC startup, alert me’ card. When activated, Ellp will pinpoint the applications that are slowing down your PC startup time. This way you can access the Task Manager, and just go straight to the applications that are delaying you from getting on with your tasks.

Ellp Tip 3: Clear out unused programs and applications

Programs and applications tend to take up a lot of space. If they’re used on a regular basis then all’s well and good. However, if you no longer make use of them, then you might want to consider getting rid of them.

Follow these steps to uninstall:

  • Access the Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features

From the list provided, simply right-click on the program or application and select Uninstall. If it doesn’t allow you to uninstall, it means that the program or application is a default program or app.

Pro Tip: Only remove programs and application you recognize, so as to avoid uninstalling any important programs you might need in the future.

  1. Some really important programs cannot be uninstalled as they are inbuilt and part of your PC’s factory settings.

Ellp Tip 4: Delete unwanted files

When was the last time you went through your files and cleared unneeded and unwanted files out? Most probably it’s been a while and it’s now taking its toll on PC performance. Keep in mind that the more files you accumulate, the slower and more cluttered your PC will become. Not only that, but these files also take up valuable space on your hard drive.

Clearing them up manually can be done. You have to go through all your folders individually, check and compare files and remove them one by one. This can be quite consuming… you’ll end up spending way more time than you should be on PC maintenance. But it’s always an option!

However, and to your relief, there is a faster and easier way to improve PC performance. With your PC assistant you can easily keep track of such files and your disk’s storage space by utilizing the following Ellp cards:

When my downloads folder is filling up, clear out the old stuff’

Once this card is activated and the time limit for how long old items can stay within the Downloads folder is set, Ellp will notify you whenever your Downloads folder is filling up and with your approval it will clear out the old stuff for you, allowing you to reclaim valuable space.

‘When my Recycle Bin is filling up, keep it clean’

This is one of the folders that is usually packed with unwanted files, yet, we never get around to clearing it. This card will do the trick,  once activated it will alert you every time your Recycle Bin is close to being overloaded with old stuff, so you can keep it clean.

‘When my hard disk is getting full, free up space’

By making use of this card, Ellp will inform you whenever your hard drive is close to getting full, and will then free up space for you. Not to worry, Ellp will only delete any temporary and junk files that are no longer needed by you or your PC – so no important files will be deleted. Once such files have been cleared out, Ellp will then notify you of the amount of space regained.

Boost PC performance

Ellp Tip 5: Do regular maintenance

One of the best ways to get the most out of your PC is to schedule regular maintenance. This means;

  • Proceeding with software updates
  • Running regular security scans
  • Checking for viruses, spyware and any other kind of malware.

Performing such regular checks, not only improves the functionality of your PC system but also helps patch up any security glitches. Which basically means that your PC is not only working faster yet is better secured against any cyber attacks.

The 5 tips to improve your PC performance may seem very basic. And you are right – they are! After all, it’s the little things that make a big difference.

Buying a new PC guide for non-tech users

August 24 - (10 Min Read)

Purchasing a new laptop or computer may seem like a daunting task, what with all the brands, models, technical parameters, shapes and sizes available on the market. This is where our guide comes in handy. It’s divided into 2 sections: before and after you buy, as the whole buying a new PC experience shouldn’t just end with the purchase. Why? Well, how you maintain it matters a lot, as it defines how well and for how long your new PC is going to serve you.

Before you buy

You really need to understand what you need first, and then build up upon that. So here are a few pointers you should take into consideration before you purchase.

1. Usability

You need to consider what the purchase is for. Is it for home use, gaming or work? If you’re looking to use your device to simply surf the net, to stay in touch with your family and friends and for the usual day-to-day stuff, then it might be best not to over invest and stick to less expensive models. If you intend to use it for work purposes, video editing or gaming, then you might want to look at higher-end devices.

2. Mobility of your lifestyle

What is your daily PC routine? How are you planning to use your new device? Will you be stationed in one place or roaming around? Will you be traveling and need to take your PC with you? If you’ll be working from one location then you might want to opt for a desktop. If you’re always on the go, then a laptop would be ideal since you can carry it around with you.

3. Price

Always take into consideration your budget. Sometimes it’s a good call to pay a bit more for an extra feature or part that boosts the performance of the whole device in a significant way.The device might serve you a bit longer and that little extra splurge would, in fact, result in savings. Ka-ching!

Once you choose your model, take a good look at different sites and visit various sellers to get an idea of the price range. Keep an eye out for offers, you might find yourself a good deal!

4. Warranty

Warranties are important! Make sure to check the specifics before purchasing. Usually, all computers and laptops come with a standard one-year warranty, however, if you feel like you need additional coverage you can pay extra for an extended warranty.

Yet, even with a proper warranty, the well-being of your device lies in your hands. Do you know how to maintain it so that it performs at its best and serves you well in years to come? This is why the next section comes in handy.

After you buy

We could provide you with pages and pages of instructions on how to maintain your PC, but keeping it simple is our thing. So instead, we present you with one simple and free toolbox that offers significant shortcuts to what can be done manually and much more!

Meet Ellp, your new PC Assistant that lets you automate your daily routine with a flip of a switch. Its simple and colorful layout allows you to identify and choose those crucial actions you want to automate so that your PC serves you for years to come.

Over the past months, the team has been focusing on making your life easier just by adding a little automation to your daily routine, so that you can focus on what matters most.

So what’s new in Ellp?

Well, this time round, the latest product updates revolve around 3 categories: Productivity, Performance, and Entertainment, and therefore we present you a new card for each of the aforementioned categories. So without further ado, let me introduce you to the latest card additions.

When my battery is fully charged, let me know

Kristina spilled the beans about this card, which was inspired by Ellp users, in yesterday’s blog post! The thing with PC battery notifications, is that you’re notified when your devices’ battery is running low, however, there is no available setting to let you know when your device has been fully charged. Well, our product team has created an Ellp card just for that purpose. The ‘When my battery is fully charged, let me know’ card, which falls underneath the Performance category, once activated will notify you whenever your battery is fully charged. This will not only help you to save up on your electricity bill but also prolong your battery’s lifespan.

August Updates - Battery fully charged card

When I turn on my PC, open my favorite application

Isn’t it annoying having to waste time searching for, and then clicking on your favorite application to open? Now you can get straight to the tasks that really matter, as when activating this new card, found within the Productivity category, Ellp will launch that one application that you use on a daily basis upon PC startup. Isn’t that neat?! By using this card you can rid yourself of morning mayhem and let Ellp set the right tone for the rest of your day.

When the International Space Station passes over me, let me know

Those of you who are obsessed with Space know what the International Space Station is and what’s its purpose. For those of you who don’t, the ISS, is a large spacecraft in low orbit around the Earth. It completes 15.5 orbits a day and serves as a home for astronauts and cosmonauts. Just in case you’d like to see it, once this card is activated, Ellp will let you know when the ISS is passing overhead.

August Updates - International Space Station card

With this latest update, now there are 34 Ellp cards made available to you, enhancing your Ellp experience. We promise you that we’ve got more up our sleeves and that more amazing updates will be available to you soon.

How to clean out, sort and organize your files

organize files
Written by Administrator
Ellp Evangelist

July 24 - (7 Min Read)

It’s Friday and you just managed to finish off a work task and ready to head home for the weekend, when Ding! You just received an email from one of your colleagues, asking for a particular file that you had worked on a couple of years back. I’m pretty sure that at that point in time, your mind would be like, “Oh no! In which folder did I place it?”

Not to worry it happens to the best of us! For me, emails like these result in instances of panic, looking up old files in the hope of finding the one I really need. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always go the way I want it to, and sometimes a search that should have taken a minute, had I organized my folders, spans to hours.

The thing is, we’re so busy that we tend to brush off organizing our files for later, but then we never actually get to it. In the meantime, our files keep on accumulating. By the time we actually get to organizing our files and folders, our hard drive is stuffed to the brim with downloaded files, music, movies, duplicate files, etc. This does not only make it even harder to go through all the files and organize them, but also takes its toll on PC performance.

So how can you create order from chaos?

With the following 3 simple points or with flipping the proper switch within Ellp, you’ll find that you’ll start introducing small changes into the way you organize your files.

This is not a trial. It’s yours to keep!

1. Cleaning

First things first! Ideally, we start by going through all the files, deleting any duplicate files and other unwanted files. You’d be amazed by the amount of space such files take up on your hard drive.

To save yourself the ordeal of going through multiple duplicate files in the future, why not activate the Ellp card, ‘When I download the same file twice, let me know’. This way Ellp would notify you of any duplicate files and get rid of them for you.

organize files-duplicates card

2. Sorting

Once you’ve cleared any duplicate and unwanted files, move each file type to its respective folder. That is if it’s a document move it to the Documents folder, if it’s a song move it to the Music folder, photos in the Pictures folder, and keep doing this for all your files.

You might say but isn’t that the obvious thing to do? Well, yes it is. But it wouldn’t be the first time that you’ve downloaded a song or document and left it in the Downloads folder. Am I right? Only saying this because I do it too!

Ellp can help you sort out your files in an easy and hassle-free manner. Simply activate the following cards, and whenever you download a document, picture, movie or song, it will save it to your preferred folder, which you specify before activating the card. Easy, no?!

  • When I download a song, save it to my preferred folder
  • When I a document, save it to my preferred folder
  • When I download a movie, save it to my preferred folder

organize files-3-ellp-cards

3. Getting organized

The last thing to do is to create folder structures. Creating folders and sub-folders helps not only to streamline your folder system but also to free up storage space, giving your PC the performance boost it so needed.

With such a neat folder system, sorting your files wouldn’t take up a lot of time, as once downloaded you can easily move it to its respective folder. Making it easier for you to locate files, as you wouldn’t have to sift through hundreds of files, but go directly to the folder you saved it to.

This is not a trial. It’s yours to keep!

We encourage you to make this small change in the way you sort and organize your files, as it not only simplifies your PC daily routine but also boosts PC performance. And why not get Ellp to help you out, whilst you’re at it? This way you can focus on more important tasks at hand.

Here’s to more productive days!

The story behind the Ellp categories

Written by Administrator

July 13 - (4 Min Read)

Ellp’s latest update brings a number of new infrastructural changes, including a new navigation menu and a sharing facility. However, the most noteworthy of them all would be the redefined categories. So far we’ve introduced you to Ellp and its automation mechanism – the Ellp cards. Now, it’s high time that we go into detail about the Ellp categories themselves, without which Ellp would be a huge pile up of disorganized cards/ disaster in the making. It’s not the case! Yet knowing where we want to take Ellp in terms of variety of cards and functionalities, it just cannot make do without categorization.

At the beginning of it all, back in September 2016, Ellp started out with 6 categories and 8 cards which have now been redefined into 4, covering: Productivity, Performance, Security, and Entertainment, allowing for easy navigation of the cards, which now add up to almost 30 cards. This not only facilitates a better user experience but also increases the visibility of the Ellp cards you really need and want to make use of.

So what do these categories cover?

Taking care of your PC, whilst handling multiple tasks at one go can be a headache at times – to say the least! We’ve all been there, I’m afraid! With the help of categories, you can have peace of mind, as you can easily find and activate the cards you need to perform the tasks for you. Let’s take a look at the 4 categories:

1. Productivity

It is so easy to get stuck wasting time on menial tasks or just wasting time in general, especially on social media. Busted! As the saying goes, time is money, so why not get Ellp to help, this way you make better use of your time and believe me, you’ll find yourself soaring through your daily tasks in no time! 2. Performance

Sometimes your lack of productivity may not necessarily be your fault, it could be affected by your PC performance. It’s frustrating to get work done when your PC isn’t cooperating – maybe it takes longer to start up and runs slowly or takes an infinite amount of time to perform even the simplest and easiest of tasks. Don’t you worry, Ellp’s got you sorted! These are our top 3 performance cards, but there’s more from where these came from, so go ahead, download Ellp and get the full range.

  • When an application is slowing down my PC startup, alert me
  • When my hard disk is getting full, free up space
  • When it’s time, check my internet speed

3. Security

I guess PC security and privacy is a number one priority on everyone’s list, especially considering the amount of cyber attacks the world has experienced in the past couple of months. No one wants to have their personal credentials, whether bank account details or personal emails or files circling the web for everyone to see. So if you’re worried about having your PC and online activities being compromised, why not try these 2 Ellp cards:

  • When my email is involved in a data breach, alert me
  • When it’s time, perform a privacy cleanup

The production of security cards takes much longer as this is a more complex task. For the time being, we’ve perfected the 2 cards mentioned above and we’re working on new security cards to be released soon. Stay tuned as they’re going to be awesome!

4. Entertainment

Everyone has his or her own way of chilling out after a hectic a day – maybe a drink after work with friends just to ease that stress or simply chillax at home listening to some music or watching that last episode from your all-time favorite series. With this in mind, we came up with solutions to save you those extra minutes, and jump straight into relaxation mode! that after a busy day can make a difference.

Our reasoning behind the cards is to give the fastest access to whatever you want to do to relax, as those couple extra minutes can make a difference after a busy day!

  • When I plug in my headphones, open my favorite application
  • When I download a song, save it to my preferred folder
