The Internet of Things is no novelty and tech companies have been discussing the idea for decades. However, for us less tech savvy individuals, the concept is still quite new. We’ve only just started tuning in and acknowledging it over the past couple of years. But let’s be honest, even though we’ve heard about it a couple of times we’re still trying to wrap our heads around what it is exactly!
No need to feel ashamed if you’re not sure what IoT is, we’re in the same boat! I too was unsure about the concept, so I decided to do some digging of my own, so you and me both can unlock this mystical concept.
What is IoT?
Simply put, the Internet of Things, links objects to the internet. It basically connects any device with an ‘on’ and ‘off’ button to the Internet and other devices. Such connectivity enables the pulling of data and insights that were never before available for study and investigation. Devices could be anything from cell phones, wearable devices, headphones, lamps, home appliances and any components that form part of a machine, such as a car or plane. Basically, any electronic device that you can think of can be connected to the Internet! Is anyone else finding this cool and scary at the same time?!
In a way, the IoT seems almost human. Obviously, it’s not, it’s just that the technology is so advanced that it makes you believe that it is! These devices have built-in sensors that can register anything from changes in light, pressure, temperature, sound and motion. They are your eyes and ears to the world that surrounds you. These sensors form part of a device category called microelectromechanical system (MEMS) which is the very link that allows technology to be fully integrated with the world. Such sensors can be connected to any microprocessor or internal components within your devices, allowing for this joint alliance to be made.
How will this affect you?
Well, considering we are so heavily plugged into technology and invested in our devices, I’d say that the IoT will have a huge impact on our lives, if it hasn’t yet already! With it’s intelligent and human-like features, technology has since played a huge part in easing and simplifying our lives! The IoT will be taking it up to a whole new level! Picture this! Imagine waking up to a freshly brewed cup of coffee from no other than the IoT. Cool! But how? Say for instance you wake up at 5 am, you could connect your alarm clock to your coffee maker so that after it wakes you up, it would immediately notify your coffee maker to start brewing your coffee. A great start to your day, wouldn’t you agree?! Or let’s say you’re in a rush to get to the airport, your car could have access to your calendar, and the GPS within your car would have already found the best route for you, deviating you from traffic. So you can get there on time and hassle free – Simply genius!
There are big plans for the IoT! According to Analyst firm Gartner, by the year 2020, there will be over 26 billion connected devices! Wow … that’s a lot of connections! The IoT popularity comes as no surprise and it will definitely open doors to numerous opportunities. Undoubtedly, this will also bring forth challenges, including issues related to security, privacy, and data sharing. The IoT will continue to grow and expand allowing for endless virtual opportunities. So, brace yourself, IoT is coming!
