Let me just quickly check if someone messaged me and I’ll get right back to you… One minute here, five more minutes there, one picture of your friends #InstaDinner, several updates from your family members about their holiday trip, Christmas party invites… Before you know it, a whole hour has passed.

Research shows that the average person spends 116 minutes on their social media every day. Not that much? In the  long run it’s 5 years and 4 months of your life. Are those funny cat videos or even best shots from the last week’s event worth it?

Interactions with social media have been tailored in a way that makes you totally hooked. You need more and more of them to function. The loop is very well-designed as it is based on chemical reactions in your body. In other words, something that can easily overwrite your conscious decisions. And this is why we all need a boost of help to minimize or at least manage our social media time.

If you are a current Ellp user, then you are probably familiar with the following productivity card ‘If I spend too much time on Facebook, ping me’. What you may have not noticed is that the card evolved!

We were getting constant feedback from you to add even more functionalities for the card or create similar ones for other social media channels. As a response, we created this card: ‘When I’m spending too much time online, ping me’.

The way the card is set up is quite awesome. All you need to do to have it work for you is to locate it under the ‘Productivity’ section of  Ellp. Then, you choose what social media and websites you want to have more control over the time you spend on them. You can choose from popular social media channels and popular websites like:

  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Twitter
  • Reddit
  • Amazon

If it’s not one of these, no worries! You have the option to add your own.

The way you do it, you choose the amount of time you want to spend on a particular channel and then you select the channel. Then, you click on ‘Add another’ and you can keep adding as many as you like.  To add your own, choose the option ‘Other’ from the drop-down menu and enter the address of the website you have in mind.

Here is my setup, just to give you an example:

As you can see, I know exactly what consumes my time the most and I plan accordingly. Yet I also take into consideration that my activities on YouTube need more time in comparison to what I do on Facebook (think watching videos vs. scrolling). I spend a lot of time on my Twitter account to build relationships for work, so I allow a bit more time there. I also get sucked by our Ellp blog, looking for new content ideas and thinking of how to further improve it, so I want some extra control of my time there.

The moment Ellp spots you mindlessly scrolling and procrastinating on any of the websites you set up for yourself, it gives you a nice nudge to remind you to go back to work. A notification as the one below will display in the low right corner of your screen.

Ellp doesn’t judge, doesn’t nag, doesn’t lecture you. Whenever you’re spending too much time online, all it does is it pings you back to your optimal state. How awesome is that?! And don’t just take my word for it, presently 14,174 people have this card activated on their PCs! That’s a big crowd!

If you’re a fan of getting things done faster, then Ellp is just the right solution for you.
